Wow, I didn't realize just how much I've missed this place! Coming back here and cruising through my flist and seeing people make posts about so many different things -- all of it reminds me of a time when fandom didn't feel so huge and impersonal and full of drama. On LJ, I didn't feel like I had to censor and edit every comment. If I needed to vent about something, I could do it in a locked post and get it off my chest and move on. I've gotten so used to biting my tongue for fear of getting hate from some part of fandom I will inevitably piss off, and I don't think I'd realized just how much that had sucked the fun out of my fandom experience.

It's been nice to come here and see posts on my flist and people having discussions and actually being able to disagree with each other without in ending in massive wank. Lord knows LJ isn't low-wank by any stretch, but I feel like it's manageable here, if that makes sense.

Thanks for everyone who gave me encouragement on my last post about needing to find motivation to write. I really appreciate it!

I think it's easier here to avoid some of the wank. The reblogging format of Tumblr means that some of the fandom wank just keeps reappearing on your dash, and it can get old fast. I think LJ is much better suited for conversations, especially in communities. Tumblr is great for disseminating an idea or an image very quickly, but it also makes it very difficult to pull something back if you've had second thoughts.

Good to see you back. I've just resurfaced for many of the same reasons. I have fond memories of this place.

Well now, you're the one who actually made LJ work for me--I'd never managed it early on, but now it's my lovely sane respite. Thanks, Emma!

And that's why I don't participate heavily in tumblr fandom. I maintain an account mostly so I can dip in to check particular art or pairing blogs, but it can all get rather melodramatic at times.

I know! Every time I peeked at my flist in the last couple of years it was sooo quiet, but lately it's really picked up again. :-)

You know, a year ago I thought that wank was easier to avoid on Tumblr, but I was clearly wrong. And it's so much more vicious on Tumblr, somehow? Maybe that's just me, but it's definitely been my experience lately.

I missed LJ too, but still have to get used to it again. I don't usually write much, I'm mostly a lurker everywhere (twitter, tumbler, LJ, forum4fans...) and I am avid fanfic reader since my fandom beginnings (almost 15 years ago).

Also, I always try and mostly I am able to avoid wank. For me fandom always was something I go for fun, so I avoid fights and drama like a plague. My dash in tumblr for instance is pretty much drama free because I choose carefully who I follow, and don't go looking for tags. But I guess this is easier when you are mostly invisible like me (I don't write, or do art, or meta... anything that can make someone more internet famous and consequently more exposed).

What I find ironic is that most people in tumblr talks about how you have to embrace and respect diversity, be tolerant etc, but at the same time there's so much hate and rudeness if you are not careful (twitter also has that).

Anyway, like I said before, I love your mind Emma, not just because you are a great writer and love your work since Harry Potter fandom, but also because I love your political and social views of the world. Thanks for being awesome ;) and I hope you don't give up this fandom because of its downsides!
