I've been in this fandom for almost a year, and I've written a lot. It's a great fandom, very cracky. One tip: about 99% of it lives on Tumblr. If you need a tour guide let me know - the fandom is chock full of injokes and memes and can seem kind of impenetrable to a newbie. Also there's a surprising amount of really great fanart from comics to paintings. Let me know if you want to join the Tumblr fandom and I can tell you some folks to follow.

AO3 is a big place for Sherlock fic. If you go to the sherlockbbc livejournal, there is extensive tagging to help you find fics, and there's also 221b_recs for recommendations. Also on sherlockbbc there is a weekly Sunday recs post. Some are on a theme, some are general. There's a tag for them so you can see just those. How much importance is there in the fandom of being very well versed in the Holmes universe in general? Are people uptight about that, or is it okay if you aren't (when it comes to writing)?

Tumblr isn't really a place to POST fic. Most people still do that on LJ or AO3. Sometimes drabbles or one-shots. But it is a huge community to discuss, squee over, recommend and share fic. When I posted the link to the final chapter of my just-completed massive AU fic, it got something like 400 notes on it. There are some fic rec tumblrs; I can't find the blogs at the mo, I'll find some later.

Tumblr is vastly superior to LJ for the quickness and ease of sharing news, images, gifs, graphics, fanart, actor news, gossip and everything else. Any tiny piece of info makes it there within seconds and spreads. About 80% of the stuff I've learned or seen or known via Tumblr never makes it to LJ at all. It's one-stop shopping for videos, clips, spoilers, everything.

For the fanartists, if you go to their tumblr page they all have clickable art tags so you can browse back thorugh their art, if you're interested. You'll start seeing who those people reblog and find more people to follow.

One other thing about this fandom - the cast and crew totally know about it and follow it. They've tweeted us pictures greeting specific fans, they've printed out our greetings back and put them up on the set (there are photos of this), they interact with us. Martin Freeman's wife posts to one of his FAcebook fan pages and talks to us. She buys fan-made Qwertee shirts for their kids. She is our Queen. It's a bit freaky but also awesome.

Oh, and for canon expertise, no, they're not uptight about it at all. It's totally okay. You'll get more out of the eps and some of the fic if you do know the canon, but it's not a requirement.

Ohh! Good grief! There's so much good Sherlock BBC fic out there - this fandom particularly loves AU's, which is marvellous as they're usually all IC! Three I recommend are

madlori's Performance in a Leading Role (Sherlock and John are actors! It's such a beautiful, incredible fic. Definitely a must read.) And The Theory of Narrative Causality (The Meta fic to beat all Meta fics. Sherlock is a fanartist who loves to cause wank and John is a well-loved fanfic writer. It's so epic.) And Two Two One Bravo Baker (John and Sherlock meet a few years earlier. Whilst John is still an Army Medic. So much glorious porn, complete with fabulous plot!!)

Well since you asked, there is a ton of it. This fandom is incredibly prolific. I'll give you recs I can remember and then some places to find recs.

I’d start with her “Warzone Series.” It slots right into canon, and is incredibly hot IC smut. Then there’s “Best Laid Etc” for more IC canon smut. Then when you have a ton of time read her epic “Two Two One Bravo Baker” which is a smutty AU where John and Sherlock meet in Afghanistan. It has also spawned an entire fandom of it’s own. Then just generally check out everything else she’s done.

You’ll also want to check out wordstring’s “Paradox Series.” http://wordstrings.livejournal.com/ It is one of the most well written things I have read in fandom, and as I recall it’s mostly NC-17. It can get very disturbing, but I found it very in line with the disturbing aspects of the show, and it’s basically all about John and Sherlock’s epic messed up love.

I'm actually reading a Sherlock story right now (first one I've ever read), because of both the news of Benedict jointing the Trek cast, and because my sister has been telling me I need to watch the series (now I just need to find a place to watch it, lol). So I can't vouch for the ICness of the particular fic, but the author,

beren_writes, has a good history with ICness in the other fandoms I've read her stuff in based on my experience.

Anyway, it's a Sherlock/HP crossover of sorts, Sherlock centric. No porn I'm afraid, it's PG-13, but I'm really enjoying it thus far, I'm about halfway through.
