I was rooting for Finney - one of my favourite actors. I think Ewan's part seemed like the most "lightweight" of the two Edward Blooms (judging from reviews). I'd prefer Ewan to get a nomination for something a bit more gritty, to be honest. But just imagine Jude, Johnny and Ewan sitting next to each other on the first row. Wouldn't that have been a pretty sight?

I was hoping that Ewan would get something for this year's body of work... Young Adam , Big Fish....

And it sure would have been pretty!! I have a funny feeling it'll be Bill Murray... don't know why??

I think it'll be Sean Penn. Long overdue, two acclaimed perfs this year.. Bill Murray is still struggling to erase his 80s comedy past.

With all due respect to Mr. McGregor, the men who got nominated really, really deserve it. I think Ewan's a great actor, butr I'm not certain I've seen a performance from him that would merit a nomination in comparison. I think he deserves a nod for Young Adam, but that apparently didn't qualify.

I agree - as MDH will tell you it is merely customary for me at this time of year to have a brief, unjustified rant about whichever particular pet thing of mine didn't get nominated this particular year. And then I gradually calm down... until the night they give all the statuettes to *entirely* the wrong people and I get to rant again.

After many years of me complaining that i was going to give up on the Oscars, I finally actually did it several years ago. Can't remember when, exactly, but it was a year when all the black male actors nominated were roles of characters in prison. (Musta been the "Green Mile" year.)

Okay, so Hollywood racism isn't entirely the Oscars' fault. But I've seen too many talented actors of color get passed over for a nomination, let alone a win. The Oscars is just a giant popularity contest, run by a bunch of rich old white men. The last time I watched any of the Oscars was the year when Robin Williams sang the song nominated from "South Park: The Movie."

The only remotely interesting thing will be if LOTR wins for best picture. Um...assuming it indeed got nominated?

Yes, it did... and yes it will probably win as a sort of cumulative prize for the three films combined.

I try and I try to give up the Oscars as every year they annoy the hell out of me, but I just can't stop. Hells - I'm still sore that Tom Hanks didn't win Best Actor for Big, and that's gods only knows how many years ago :o) It's all so bloody political... watch how ILM won't win Best Effects for PotC even though the CGI in that film was jaw-droppingly awesome. Lucas's face doesn't fit, so it'll go to WETA... again. Every year MDH rolls his eyes at me as I have my annual Oscar rant. Last year it was Chicago, this year, it's the total absence of nominations for Big Fish... I just get passionate about these things... Can't help it!

Are the Oscars as big a deal in the UK as they are in the US? It's always seemed to be an event glorifying the American film industry, from my perspective.

Oh yes - they are still very much a big deal over here. Even though we have the BAFTAs, it's still the Oscars that are seen as the barometer of opinion. And these days, the BAFTA nominations seem ever closer to the Oscar ones anyway. So yes - it's still viewed as the big, glitzy, IMPORTANT film ceremony. Although, I personally feel that the Oscars have devalued themselves of late with some truly *awful* decisions... but that would only set me ranting.. AGAIN!! And no one wants that!!! No!!
