I think cats are beautiful animals, but unfortunately I'm allergic O_O :(

Most dogs i'm fine with, *shrugs* I know it's weird. I never had a problem with my golden retriever and she shed a lot of hair. I’ve read that the allergy can be to do with some kind of secretion from an animal’s skin, but I don’t know how reliable that source was, and it was from a long time ago.

The husband is allergic to cats. We have dogs that have hair instead of fur, which means they get an actual haircut every 4 to 5 weeks.

PS/ Just butting in!!!

According to this (http://www.hsus.org/pets/pet_care/allergies_to_pets/index.html), it's not the hair but something secreted by the skin (as you suggest) that causes the problem. They also not that people who are allergic to cats are almost always allergic to dogs too, but for some reason, many people tend to have a stronger reaction to cats.

It says here (http://www.hsus.org/pets/pet_care/allergies_to_pets/index.html) that it has nothing to do with hair, actually, and that all breeds of cats and dogs are allergenic to people who have that allergy. Hmm...

Wow. Thank you for linking me :)

I'd agree with the stronger reaction to cats. Perhaps I don't notice the reaction to dogs, or I just assume I'm reacting to cats. Because I've almost never been around a dog without a cat nearby...

Anyway, I'm going to leave you alone now - sorry to bother you.

I like dogs, but they are far too needy for me these days! My cats are sweet and cuddly, but they're also okay on their own when I'm gone for a week. ;-)

It's definitely their independence that I appreciate. But I've always preferred them to dogs, for whatever reason. Dogs always seemed smelly and messy to me, while cats were cuddly and sweet, but not so compltely dependent on me for everything.

I love dogs but I love cats just that wee bit more. Anything that sounds like a running motor wrapped in warm fuzz gets me everytime.

Yeah, exactly. I don't hate dogs - I just like cats better!

Very interesting, the husband is deadly allergic to the cats, his throat closes and he can't breathe. He gets similar reactions from dogs like golden retrievers or labs but, not from soft hair dogs like ours.
The grooming regularly might be a more important factor than I ever consider.
Ta Da!

Ah, that's cruel, forcing people to choose. xD The deciding factor for me was how dogs try to cuddle when you're crying. Nothing in the world can beat that.

I love cats best, but I'm bias since we've had our cat since I was 8 and I've never had a dog. Dogs remind me of cute but annoying little children always after attention, while cats seem far more sophisticated and do what they please when they please. Hehe. Reminds me of Draco a bit.

I really can't pick one. I have a cat and a dog, and I love them both madly. It would be like choosing between my children.

I love them both, too! They each have their own quirks and adorable factor. IMO, dogs are more emotionally attached to their owners. We have a Brittany named Hap, who gives hugs and snuggles. When my ailing mother was visiting recently, he went out of his way to give her lots of attention and cuddles. He would walk next to her everywhere she went, as if to keep her safe. My precious kitty seemed to say, "Oh, hi Grandma", and went on with his nap.
