Seriously, WTF? I saw this earlier and sort of went, oh, wank? Huh. But then I saw a particular wankerific post on this topic (btw, I really liked what you said, well done - hope you get a reasonable response to your second comment), and just - God, is that what we're down to? We've wanked about everything else, so now we have to pick on people's comm names???

thanks. not me, a friend over at [livejournal.com profile] hogwarts_elite for all the Slytherins. Brian is our new God. There's even a list of ten commandments about his worship. *translated - we were really bored and of questionable sobriety in chat late one night*

I see I shall have to explain the subtext, which was, can I use it, and if so, who do I credit? :P If you'd rather I didn't, that's just fine. Just wondering. :)

I caught the subtext. I was being equally subtexty in a very uncharacteristic display of Gryffindor tendencies. But I suppose that if I'm going to use it around town, I really should ask the creator specifically if she minds others using. I'll get back to you.

Never mind, then. Too complicated.

It looks like she's fair game for sharing. It wasn't up at her icon journal, but I found this thread regarding said icon. It's amazing what you can accomplish when you're avoiding sleep.

But don't you also use "pants" for trousers? I vaguely remember some young american boy in my class having a fit of giggles when were about 11 ... and I've thought pants = trousers every since *lol*/

American --> English
pants = trousers
panties = women's underwear
garter belt = suspender belt
vest = waistcoat
undershirt = vest
suspenders = braces
knickers = knee breeches (I think)

I used to read the Morris Dancing Discussion List back when I was a morris dancer, and the amusement on the part of British dancers when Americans (particularly men) said that their team's kit was, say, suspenders and knickers, was understandably immense.

Yep, we do. But they're two completely different words that don't associate with each other here, if you get my meaning. I mean, it would be very common to say, "She took off her pants and then pulled off her lacy panties," and it wouldn't sound weird at all.

Actually, I had't really though about those words being related before. I think "panties" comes from "pantaloons". I don't know if "pants" comes from the same source.

Then there's always 'don't get your gotch in a knot'. LOL!

Why 'gotch'? Who knows?

I've never heard that one before! Maybe it's a rhyming thing?

It was popular when I was a teenager - back in the seventies. LOL

oh god i had to de-lurk for this one

in my family we call them something like 'gotchies' (i've never seen the word written down tho)

it's still the first word that comes to mind when i think of underwear

personally, i hate the word panties with a passion, but i havent the slightest earthly idea why...as a substitute i have recently adopted 'knickers' (since i cant very well go around saying "gotchies", can i?)

Underwear -- it's so gender-neutral!

I like "undies", though. ;-)

Honestly, is it even relevant whether you call 'em panties or nickers? I can't believe even things like that make it to wankdom. Er... That's kind of pathetic :/

Brit here. In my family, boys wear pants and girls wear knickers - but women still use pantyliners, strangely enough.

I'm sure the regional variations would provide a whole host of associated words, but I have NEVER heard the word 'bloomers' used in that context, not nowadays. Even my granny just wore really big knickers... :)

Pantyliners, eh? Someone else commented on here that she hears "panties" used quite often in the UK.

Where I lived 'panties' was the word only the posh kids used... and we were anything but, so 'knickers' it was ;)

Pantie wearers unite!!! I also like the word chonies.(with a long oo people. THe argument itself is rather silly isn't it? However, although I do use the word panties and I rather like it, it does bring to mind little girls in their underroos.

Once I saw you were the maintainer for the [livejournal.com profile] writing_sex community, and I am but a mere watcher, I came to your journal. I hadn't found a posting where I could make a suggeston for a link at the community.

The Dictionary of Sexual Terms and Expressions (http://www.sex-lexis.com/) might be a good addition to the site.

I hope I haven't overstepped any bounds of etiquette in slipping this in here. But, I just thought this was a good addition. Thank you.

Oh, and some folks in the South call'em 'drayars', too.
