I was waiting for this to happen
Oct. 25th, 2007 11:30 amEdit: Since the Y!group has now been deleted, I'm unlocking this post.
I saw this posted on a non-fandom comm I'm in. The Yahoo group Severus Snape's Slytherin Society (a gen Snape discussion group) is being closed by the moderator because she is so completely disgusted with JKR's "Dumbledore is gay" revelation that she just can't go on, basically. She wrote an extremely hostile anti-gay post, the text of which is publicly available here.
( I'll post it here under the cut, in case it gets deleted or something. )
Okay, so why should we care what a nutjob who wants to shut down her nearly 2000-member Y!group says? Maybe we shouldn't, but I think we should at least be aware that parts of the fandom (I'm sure this isn't isolated) are reacting this way to JKR's comments. It's so easy to get isolated in your own little corner of fandom and to think that WE are fandom. But really, we're not. We're still outliers, on the extreme side. We're those pervy slashers, and fucking proud of it! But I think it's good to be reminded of that every once in a while. If nothing else, we can see how far we've come since the days when we couldn't have our own panels at cons, yeah?
I guess we could also be happy that people like this are leaving the fandom. Heh.
There has been a lot of wank about the issue among slashers, and many of us wish JKR had handled the Dumbledore situation differently (or even not done it at all). But this? Is batshit insane. This is not us, and I am SO grateful for that! If I've disagreed with a post you've made in the last week, I want to tell you that it's really no big deal. THIS is what I'm talking about in my posts and comments -- these bigots. Not you wonderful, intelligent, thoughtful people.
As an aside, I'm so sorry for any of you who are Christians, that this twat thinks she represents you. I know she doesn't, but it must make you crazy. *hugs*
