That Guardian article one more time
Aug. 7th, 2006 07:14 pmI've seen a lot of people commenting on both sides of the debate about the Guardian article. It seems that people's responses largely fall into two camps:
1. OMG that bitch slammed my fandom!! And she hasn't even read the books! And she's not even a good journalist!! This is horrible and we should fight back!
2. What's the big deal? I thought it was funny. Don't you have any sense of humor about yourself at all? I mean geez, she hasn't even read the books. What did you expect? Just laugh it off.
My opinion is somewhere in between, and I've been feeling a bit alone in that. What bothered me about the article most was the subtext of it. Yes, I am indeed a slasher, so you know subtext=buttsex is important to me. The subtext in that article was so inherently misogynistic that I barely noticed the slams against the fandom. I barely noticed the bad journalism. And I know other people sensed it, because so many people commented that they thought it had been written by a man. (No offense intended to the men on my flist.)
But wow,
jlhhas made the point so much more eloquently than I ever could have. Wherever you stand on the issue, go read what she said, because it so completely expresses what irked me about that article. Oh, and read the other article she linked before you read her post, because it's important.
