GOF!! Squee!
Nov. 18th, 2005 07:36 pmI've now seen it twice -- at midnight last night and again right after work today. In fact, I just got home from the second viewing. :-D I haven't read anyone else's comments yet, because I wanted to write my thoughts without influence from anyone else.
Overall impression: Wow. Fast paced, action packed, funny, touching, exciting, scary -- I comepletely LOVED it. There really wasn't anything about the film that I didn't like. I'm sure there are people who will complain bitterly about what was missing, but I'm not one of them. The fact that they could tell that story in two and a half hours is frickin' amazing. My metaphorical hat is off to the screenwriter!
The trio: They were so adorable! As actors, the three kids were really great. Their performances were subtle, nuanced, and so perfectly crafted. Rupert is finally becoming natural, not so much the face-pulling clown he's been in the earlier films. Dan was so deliciously awkward, absolutely perfect. Sometimes that awkwardness was painful, because it was just so real. When Harry came back with Cedric's body, Dan's emotion was perfect. It was the first real anguish we've seen from him, I think, and he did it so well. In general, Dan was adorable! And Rupert in the sleeveless shirt? Hello! Emma's in an A-cup, bless her heart.
The Twins: They fucking STOLE the movie! They were perfect, just like I imagine them to be. I was so thrilled to see them finally get their due in this film! Every scene they were in was fantastic. Their interactions with Harry and Ron were great too, and their endless teasing of Ron was hilarious.
The Quidditch World Cup: It went by fast because it had to, but it was so exciting while it lasted! I would have loved to have seen a straight-on shot of Draco in that turtleneck, though. ;-)
Harry/Ron: Geez, OTP! The Harry/Ron angst was so slashy I could hardly believe it. Hey
kerryblaze, rec me some fic?
Neville: I LOVED the fact that Neville got to shine in this film! It was a brilliant idea to let him be the one to help Harry with the gillyweed, and I loved the fact that we saw Neville being good at and absorbed in Herbology. He was so adorable! And he was the first boy to stand when McGonagall asked them to practice dancing -- such a Gryffindor!
Lack of Pumpkin Pie: I was worried that the film would be Pumpkin Pie-ish from the preview stuff I'd seen, but it really wasn't like that. It was so clear at every point (IMO) that their relationship is entirely platonic. Harry ogled her when she came down the stairs at the Ball, but it was in a "I'm so happy for you" way. Otherwise, he didn't look at her like he looked at Cho.
Cho: Yikes, the accent! I wasn't expecting that!
Cedric: Oh, so lovely and sweet! His male friends just couldn't keep their hands off him, I noticed. Heh.
Favorite moments:
• Nagini cam!
• Cedric, his dad, and Arthur knowing how to land from a portkey while everyone else landed on their asses.
• Ron being "in love" with Krum!
• Ron telling Harry to piss off and turning away, looking for all the world like his widdle heart had just broken. (Sooooo slashy.)
• Harry and Ron making up. I was like, kiss him already!
• The shot of Ron ogling the Beauxbatons girls' asses, heh.
• Hagrid/Madame Maxime! Oh, him putting his hand on her ass while they were dancing was fantastic! Did anyone else see the shot where they were dancing and he had his head on her chest and think "Sixteen Candles"?
• The twins rolling on the floor wrestling. I've never been a big fan of twincest, but... ;-)
• Fredor George (can't remember which) asking Angelina to the Ball. God, that was adorable! And the look he gave Ron after -- wow.
• Snape in that study hall scene. I swear Dan and Rupert are cracking up in one of those shots! But Snape rolling up his sleeves before the last one just killed me!
• Harry in the tub with Myrtle trying to sneak a peek! Oh, there's a fic waiting to be written. *coughs* (Oh, and the audience in the midnight show totally squeed when we saw half-naked Harry!)
• Rita Skeeter dragging Harry into a closet and remarking that he must feel right at home. *grins* Come out, Harry!
• Barty Crouch Jr. doing the tongue flick thing at Snape, heh. And "I'll show you mine if you show me yours." That guy needs to be slashed, pronto. With Snape, preferably. Or Lucius. ;-)
• Ron starting to flip the twins off when they teased him for dancing with McGonagall, but her catching his hand just in time.
• The ferret scene, obviously. The ferret going down Crabbe's pants was great! And did I dream this, or did Goyle go after it? (People are telling me in comments thath he did!)
• The Yule Ball looking so much like a typical school dance, with the grungy band and the kids bouncing all around! And Flitwick!
• Crouch-Moody's attire at the Ball -- complete with dead ferret hanging over the crotch!
• The smirk on Harry's face when Hermione admitted that her relationship with Krum was entirely "physical".
• The Patil twins chorusing, "Hi, Harry!" every time they walked by. On my second viewing, the teenage boys sitting in front of me loved that bit too. Every time it happened, they said, "Harry, go for the twins!!"
• Voldemort touching himself. Nuff said.
More thoughts added:
• People seem to have strong feelings about Dumbledore in this film. My thoughts are here.
• My thoughts about the addition of Barty Jr. to the scene with Voldemort.
There's so much more I want to say, but I'm operating on three hours of sleep! In summary, I LOVED IT SO MUCH!!! I think it's my favorite HP film yet, and that's saying a lot because I loved POA!
ETA: It must finally be time for bed, because the sheer number of "Hated it!" posts on my f-list is starting to piss me off. People are entitled to their opinions, but be reasonable, folks -- it's not just a visual of the 700+ page book! It's an interpretation of it, and one done in a completely different medium. There are things you can show on film in a single moment that would take pages of text in a book , so of course it isn't the same. Watch it again, and think about it -- some of what you think is horrible and missing and OMG-so-awful is not what you think.
And with that, I think I'll go to sleep!
ETA 2 (the next morning): For my own reference, I'm going to link to other people's awesome reviews here.

Goyle did go after it. Got his fingers bit! I sense a rhyme there...

Date: 2005-11-19 03:49 am (UTC)I think you picked on all of my favourites too.
The only thing I didn't like about the film was how rushed it was in the beginning, but I understand that they had to do it.
My absolute favourite scenes were of Snape in study hall continuously smacking Harry and Ron in the head. I really thought that last time he was going to knock their heads together. :x lol.
And of course the ferret scene. I laughed so hard when Goyle went after the ferret in Crabbe's pants.
I loved the little bits of Draco. Especially at the QWC. Wow. Gorgeous. *shifty*
I can't wait to see it again. I was supposed to bring my brother tonight, but it was completely sold out AND it was in two theatres. Hopefully we'll have better luck tomorrow. :)))) ♥

Date: 2005-11-19 04:13 am (UTC)As for those who "hated it", well give people credit for artisitc license. Sure there are parts that I didn't really like, such as adding Barty, Jr. to the opening scene and subsequently Harry's memories. But I thought the maze was much better in the movie. Very Stephen King. And I was so glad to see Lucius again. He is so deliciously evil.
Yep, must see it again, maybe on Sunday.

Date: 2005-11-19 05:27 am (UTC)It was such a slash fest for those of us looking. I loved all the twincest implications, and Snape shoving Harry and Ron's heads down made my night. Such a reminder of what they do for him. I am right there with you on Harry and Ron's kissing and making up. They were so close. I loved how Hermione was about to cry or something. You know she thought they needed to kiss.
Honestly, I am not a cryer in movies, but when Harry came back with Cedric's body and wouldn't let go? I just had to cry. The emotion Dan showed was fantastic. And poor Mr. Diggory? I don't know how people managed not to cry. Overall, I agree with your review-it was fab. I'm jealous you've seen it a second time already.

Date: 2005-11-19 05:28 am (UTC)Your comment about Fred and George was spot on! I loved them in this! They were hilarious!!!
After Surrender the Grey and this movie, I love Cho. I love her accent. How am I going to hate her in the fifth movie???
Green eyes!!
Date: 2005-11-19 05:33 am (UTC)He had INCREDIBLE green eyes in this one!
They were gorgeous!
And those nipples!! Mmmmmm, finger-lickin' good!!
I think this is probably my favorite movie so far. Things were sacrificed for the overall plot, but the story stayed the same. It was intense, without a single dull spot, all the way through.
I can't wait to go to W-Mart for the soundtrack.
And I am going to ruin my TV when the DVD comes out.
Hehe, Dan's nipples will be burned into the screen from being watched so many times.
