TWENTY YEARS AGO I was in the sixth grade in Greensboro, NC, riding my horse every day and anxiously awaiting the release of Return of the Jedi My friends and I dressed our Barbie dolls up like the SW characters and acted out scenes we'd like to see in the upcoming film. (Many of them were X-rated...)
TEN YEARS AGO I was somewhere in Montana, Minnesota, or North Dakota with the now-defunct Up With People. I was having the time of my life, learning a lot, and had no idea what was in store for me in that amazing year.
THREE YEARS AGO I had recently passed my qualifying exams for my doctorate and was starting to figure out what the hell I wanted to do my research on. I was enjoying my new rank as a "senior" grad student on my department, one of only a few women who'd made it that far.
ONE YEAR AGO I defended my dissertation. I called my grandfather right afterwards to tell him there was now a "doctor" in the family. He died from lung cancer five days later.
YESTERDAY my husband and I went to an amusement park and rode roller coasters all day. We went to a musical revue at the park featuring music from the sixties, and were stunned to see the cast performing the same vocal arrangements and choreography that we'd both done in Up With People. I guess the show biz world is a small place!
TOMORROW I'm going to catch up on my grading, work on my research, and make love to my husband. Probably in that order!
