Oooh.

A friend just wrote me to let me know someone is posting a fic on AFF called Left My Heart.

Here's the summary: "In the beginning of the Last Battle, Draco faked his own death to protect Harry. He was to go to the States until Voldemort was dead and his Death Eaters were captured. Two years later, Harry decides to go on vacation, and runs into the one."

Interesting...

Curious... Keep an eye on it, just in case.

Yeah, I plan to do that! Thanks.

[identity profile] kuteki.livejournal.com 2004-11-20 10:28 am (UTC)(link)
:( That's not nice, even if the author is 13 like she says. And apparently it was deleted "for no apparent reason" and so she is reposting it. Although at a glance the first chapter is not like LMH, perhaps she thinks that stealing the idea and rewriting it means that the story becomes hers.

[identity profile] figoo.livejournal.com 2004-11-20 11:07 am (UTC)(link)
. . . if She's 13 why the hell is she on AFF anyway?!

maybe you should comment right away and not wait.

[identity profile] emmagrant01.livejournal.com 2004-11-20 08:27 pm (UTC)(link)
You think? I've been considering. At least she should change the title, IMO.

Uh oh....guess imitation (read: BLATANT theft) is the best form of flattery.

Actually, you're right about that!

She seems to have used the title and the basic premise of your story, and then taken her own direction. Which she may well think is fine, but I do think it would be a good idea to say something right now. Titles do get duplicated at times, but that's not a common one, so I can't believe it's coincidence.

[identity profile] littleroo27.livejournal.com 2004-11-20 11:37 am (UTC)(link)
Well it is a song title, kinda... but I agree, at least letting her know that she's being watched might help her consider how closely she wants to keep her story to the original LMH... perhaps a request for a title change as well would be in order.

Also - if she's 13 then AFF should really delete her account.

Please R/R! I worked hard on this!

This message is for AFF.NET: My story got deleted from this site for no fucking reason, so I'm posting it again. Whoever doesn't like it, too bad.

Ummm....cuz maybe she's underage...and maybe now because she's trying to swipe from you?

She must be 13. The writing itself shows that, sadly.

[identity profile] emmagrant01.livejournal.com 2004-11-20 08:31 pm (UTC)(link)
It is pretty bad, huh? You know, part of my issue here is that the title's the same, and people might see that and think it's my fic! :-P

[identity profile] ias.livejournal.com 2004-11-20 11:57 am (UTC)(link)
I'd say contact her and suggest she looks for another title as you already have a fic with the same title and also a post-war setting where Harry runs into Draco. From what she's written (none too well), she hasn't used anything from your plot - the common elements of Harry running into Draco postwar are so common in fandom as not to be significant. However two fics with the same title will cause confusion, even if the title is based on a pre-existing song. Perhaps you could give her suggestions from the titles you considered but rejected (and maybe a little beta advice while you are at it)?

[identity profile] ravenfrog.livejournal.com 2004-11-20 12:40 pm (UTC)(link)
What [livejournal.com profile] ias said. The postwar meeting (even in America) is pretty common, it's really the title that's the shame. So a gentle approach might get her to a) change it, and b) improve that 13 year old writing. *grin*

I question the fact that she is 13 and writting 'R' fics on AFF.net. Someone should really alert Ayla as to that an underage has an account there, to protect her butt.

Hmm I would keep reading updates and seeing if it is similiar. If it is I would proceed to have a little chat with her if I was you.

Sorry about this hun. *hugs* But never fear for yours is and will always be far superior!

[identity profile] emmagrant01.livejournal.com 2004-11-20 08:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I think her age or the title may be what got her story deleted in the first place. Thanks!

Have you had a look? It's one single chapter and it's so bad it's embarrassing. I wouldn't worry about plagiarization - you need more brains than this to properly cut 'n paste.

[identity profile] emmagrant01.livejournal.com 2004-11-20 08:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, I've had a look, which is why I haven't accused her of plagiarism. It's not my story, but the title and the summary are close enough to be suspicious. I'm honestly more concerned that people will confuse the two because of the title! :-P

[identity profile] sciencegeek.livejournal.com 2004-11-20 05:10 pm (UTC)(link)
At risk of repeating everything everyone else has said, it's hard to judge whether or not it's going to be really similar after one chapter, but I think one should keep an eye on it. Though, I would recommend asking her to change the title; it may confuse some people, who think it's yours.

[identity profile] emmagrant01.livejournal.com 2004-11-20 08:35 pm (UTC)(link)
That's a good idea. Thanks!

[identity profile] jexay.livejournal.com 2004-11-20 06:51 pm (UTC)(link)
*groans* I didn't even finish the chapter. I started to get a migraine.

This child's so called fics all sound eerily familiar. e.g.

A Fine Line Between Love and Hate
Draco gets kicked of his house because his dad finds out he’s gay. While thinking about a place to go, Harry Potter suddenly pops into his mind...

The first sentence in her summary sounds like a fic I read before. I probably even got that link from your QaJ post-Hogwarts rec page. The second sentence sounds like 'Welcome to the Real World'.

Seems she's combining several fics as a means to 'write' an original. Now that sounds like a 13-year old's logic. But no 13-year old should have an account on AFF.net.

I also echo everyone else's opinion on what to do with this kid.

*hugs*

[identity profile] emmagrant01.livejournal.com 2004-11-20 08:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, I hadn't thought of connecting it to other simlar stories! Interesting! She's been deleted once, so maybe it will happen again. I'm going to think about it a bit more, and then I might leave a comment of my own. Thanks!

Wow, now that is blatant thievery. I've been accused in the past of stealing ideas from other writers, but I was oblivious to the theft as I hadn't read the fic... and there were only 3 things that were similiar. However, in this case title and story synopsis sound so eerily familiar, it's rather icky. Of course, your Left My Heart is "the" fic ;) and I'd rec nothing else but that Left My Heart. Eagerly awaiting the sequel.

[identity profile] emmagrant01.livejournal.com 2004-11-20 08:38 pm (UTC)(link)
It's quite close, isn't it? And the fact that the title is the same... that's the thing that bothers me. I don't want people to confuse the two. Thanks, also!

[personal profile] ciaan 2004-11-20 07:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I suppose this is slightly on topic, as I just came over to say that I finished reading the revised "Left My Heart" (ahem, your one, of course) last night. Definitely much tighter, more description, better explication of motivations, plot elements woven in from the beginning, all the stuff revising is supposed to do. :) I kept noticing fixes to parts that had seemed plot-hole-y before, and I definitely noticed the new elements or more developed elements that set up for the next part of the story.

And I, for one, was quite relieved and pleased to see Harry tell Draco about what had happened to Neville, even though I doubt anyone else in the word got half as worked up about that little loose end as I did.

[identity profile] emmagrant01.livejournal.com 2004-11-20 08:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you! Yeah, those were exactly the things I was working so hard to fix in the rewrite, so thank you for noticing!

Given that your title comes from a rather well-known song, I don't think it's unrealistic to think that someone else would come up with the same title. And the story so far doesn't seem very much like yours at all. After all, a story that borrows from the song "I Left My Heart in San Francisco," is *going* to take place in the US of A.

I don't think there's anything wrong with borrowing someone's idea and doing your own version of it - sounds too much like fanfic. (Although IMO, there is not enough similarity in this gal's story to indicate a direct tie to your story.) What would bother me is if someone directly stole my words, or else quite obviously stole my storyline. Although who was it, Rose, who discovered that she had inadvertently written almost exactly the same story as a gen writer? We read so many stories that percolate through our minds. Unless there is a *very* strong resemblance or direct copying, I wouldn't worry about it. But then, that's me.

I have to say, though, I really liked this line: Crystaline tears made their way down his pale cheeks as he thought about the possibly large amount of time he'd have to be away from Harry.

Why can't you write lines like that, my dear? :P

[identity profile] emmagrant01.livejournal.com 2004-11-21 10:07 am (UTC)(link)
It would only really bother me if it were a direct copy and paste, which it isn't. The fact that the title is the same irks me a bit, but it's not like I claim to have any copyright on the title. I do think, though, that the title is a bit unique, so it seems likely that the two stories are connected somehow. If I were writing a fic that shared a title with another known fic, I'd probably change the title, just to avoid confusion. But then, that's me.

Why can't you write lines like that, my dear?

*rolls eyes*

....this is a random fan/lurker/adorer of you, and i just wanna i've (forced myself to) read the fic (thinking i should at least be fair and try to read it with an open mind) but i just have to say that it was quite awful and i am too quite concern with her age and how she has an account at AFF.net how did ppl here knew bout her age, anyway?

anyway, it's *nothing AT ALL* like u'r fic, I mean, seriously, this:
'"This is so unfair," he screamed and sobbed catching everyone's attention at the airport'

...it just made me all teary-eyed....

advice - just like everybody else

[identity profile] riding-pegasus.livejournal.com 2004-11-22 04:52 am (UTC)(link)
I've got an even better idea: how about you or somebody else mailing her a link to this site here (your text and all the comments on it)? It says all there is to say ... then you could lean back and wait what happens .. for about a week .. and then mail ayla - I AM open minded about age - put not so much as to allow a 13(!) year old on AFF .. not even if they were from a country allowing at this age to get married already!
Love your fic though and awaiting the sequel desperately .. :)

[identity profile] sarcastic-apple.livejournal.com 2004-11-22 03:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Really. How...interesting Well, apparantly, from public opinion, she writes pretty good for a 13-year-old, she has a mind-boggling amount of fans. But then again, from what I've figured out, she writes with a friend as a duo. Or something to that extent.

http://www.fanfiction.net/u/454484/

And it... kind of looks like she really might not know about you. Maybe it's just a really strange coincidence, but sadly, you can't really trust many people these days. I'll repeat what everyone else said above, and well, good luck and such.

Here, have my halloween chocolate. I'm allergic to chocolate. *gives*

[identity profile] adam-j-lupin.livejournal.com 2004-11-22 08:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I read the first chapter and, as most everyone has said, it's not very good. I'd totally take you're LMH over her's 11 times out of 10.

I agree that Left My Heart, as part of a title of a song is liable to get used often as a title to a story, but I don't know if she'd actually have heard of it. I mean, it's not the sort of song 13 year olds would go for, at least as far as I know.

I'd suggest checking in to it, but more of a "Hay! My story has the exact same title as yours!" sort of a thing. Not, you know, "You seam to have stolen my STORY AND PLOT!!!"

[identity profile] riding-pegasus.livejournal.com 2004-11-23 03:27 am (UTC)(link)
I don`t know ... ONE coincident involving the same title as somebody elses fic (and much longer on the net) is one thing, but TWO??? "A Fine Line Between Love and Hate" has been posted as title for quite some time now by a different author ... and this line is harder to come up with ...
And the description "Draco gets kicked out if his house because his dad finds out he’s gay." sounds remarkably like Jitterbugs fic - meaning jitterbug1 on ffn ... (Draco Malfoy and his Unknown fate .. or something like this)

It's the "plagiarist" here! *gaps* shoot her!

[identity profile] jessica187.livejournal.com 2004-11-23 04:27 am (UTC)(link)
For some reason, I don't even feel offened by these comments... which is very surprising. I actually NEED to know what people think about the fic so I can continue.

Emma: I swear on my LIFE I've never heard of your fic. Never ever. If I had known, I'd never had post my version. Look, I'll come back later. I have to go to school.... high school. Yes, 13 in high school. Bye!

Re: It's the "plagiarist" here! *gaps* shoot her!

[identity profile] emmagrant01.livejournal.com 2004-11-23 07:17 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, good! The more I thought about it, the more it seemed to me that was probably the case. I don't claim to have any particular copyright on that title, of course, but you might consider putting a note on your fic that you're aware it has the same title as another fic, and that your story is indeed different. People get very riled up about plagiarism in this fandom, and you might save yourself some trouble. :-)
