I've been away from the HP fandom for three years, more or less, and one of my fears about getting involved again was that there would be no one left to squee about H/D stuff with. I am so, SO happy that this was not the case. I mean seriously, check out this list of planned H/D fests in the next year (courtesy of [livejournal.com profile] vaysh11).

The H/D part of fandom is still amazingly active, and though it's definitely a smaller community than it was five years ago, it feels tighter somehow. It seems like everyone knows everyone else, and I haven't yet sensed the same level of politics and BNF-ery that there used to be. Maybe it's there and I just haven't seen it yet, but I sincerely hope not.

I'm so excited to be back, and so grateful that everyone has been so incredibly welcoming. I'm looking forward to getting to know new friends and reading and writing lots of fic!

aww, that makes me think that i should check out that friending meme. i have a lot of people on my flist who are or used to be h/d shippers, but, like me, many of us are now often distracted by shiny new things. i do consider h/d my fandom homebase even though there are lots of tv shows for which i read (and occasionally write) fic. it would be nice to have some more people on my flist who post a lot about h/d.

[identity profile] emmagrant01.livejournal.com 2011-01-29 03:59 am (UTC)(link)
I was so amazed by H/D Hols this year, and by the sheer number of amazing fics written by people I'd never heard of. I guess I shouldn't have been surprised that so many new people had found their way into the fandom, but somehow I was, with canon being closed for 3.5 years. It's interesting how different my flist is than it was a few years ago. :-)

I am VERY MUCH in love with how active and strong HP fandom still is. Harry/Draco will always hold such a special place in my heart even though I'm deeply involved in another fandom now, they're still my second OTP. Like, bastards just won't let me go. I LOVE LOVE that hd_holidays is still going as well as other fests.

[identity profile] emmagrant01.livejournal.com 2011-01-29 05:24 am (UTC)(link)
It wasn't my first fandom and I'm sure it won't be my last, but man, this pairing is always going to hold a special place in my heart. :-)

[identity profile] oldenuf2nb.livejournal.com 2011-01-29 04:34 am (UTC)(link)
Well, we're certainly glad you're back!! And in terms of the BNF-ery... man, I haven't seen any of that. In fact, the first comments I left were to two *what I would consider* to be very, very BNF's; Libby_Drew (Sansa) and Samayel. Sam left the very first comment I ever received in fandom, and Sansa is now one of my very best friends. In fact, all of the folks who have some of the most rec'd fics ever (at least, recently; say, the last three years) have been astonishingly welcoming. Alaana and Dysonrules and ruronihime and Faithwood and Pir8fancier and Bryonneybrynn and frayach and... well, the list goes on. And I have not seen one bit of elitist, BNF nonsense from a one of them.

So, again, welcome back!

[identity profile] emmagrant01.livejournal.com 2011-01-29 05:26 am (UTC)(link)
When I think of the BNF-ery of the old days (like 7 or 8 years ago), I'm thinking of... well, there's no point in mentioning names now. But geez, there was SO much wank, and there were some people who just generated pages of wank every time they posted, and they were so well known, and gah. I haven't seen anything like that at all in the last 6 months, and it's such a relief!

It may not be smaller, but rather just changing. Some people grow tired of it and move on, but there has been a big influx of new folks, as well. I've been in the fandom for only 4 years, but I was in H/G at first and then moved on the Snape-centric fic. Then finally to slash and to H/D. I was over on Yahoo mostly. I had an LJ account, but didn't use it for fandom until about a year ago.

It will always be in a big of flux, but I'm so happy that some of the original folks stuck around or came back. It's also great to get to know some new authors, who I'm finding are every bit as talented as the writers were in 2006. Hopefully, there will be a few who will write some big, long epic fics of awesomeness. That's what I miss the most. I want lots of novel-length fics.

I'm really happy to see you back and posting. Hope you stay awhile and write some more wonderful stuff.

[identity profile] emmagrant01.livejournal.com 2011-01-29 05:28 am (UTC)(link)
6 or 7 years ago this part of the fandom seemed so HUGE to me. I don't really have a handle on how big it is now, but the H/D fen seem a lot closer than they did back then, and that certainly makes a difference.

That's what I miss the most. I want lots of novel-length fics.

Big Bang! :-D

I couldn't agree more. I sort of love it that so many of us are moving along with life, having kids, careers, all sorts of stuff, and still love the boys, and each other! I didn't join HP fandom until 2004, but it was still a big scary place then, and now, well, all of the writers I love are friends, and seem like real people instead of strange goddesses of slash.

If that makes sense. Kids are sick, no sleep for me. You know.

[identity profile] emmagrant01.livejournal.com 2011-01-29 05:47 am (UTC)(link)
and now, well, all of the writers I love are friends, and seem like real people instead of strange goddesses of slash.

Yes, that's it exactly! I'm not sensing the same class system, for lack of a better word. It just feels like a bunch of people who like H/D, which is the way it should be. :-)

I am so glad you are back. I remember way back when you were posting LMH one chapter at the time and I couldn't wait for posting day! (TMI...I actually improve my technique for bj by reading LMH)
Our corner of the world may be getting smaller but H/D till the end :)

[identity profile] emmagrant01.livejournal.com 2011-01-29 05:52 am (UTC)(link)

There was a sort of class system? I have been in the fandom for about seven years, but I was mostly just reading on ff.net so I wasn't involved with the actual people ;p

[identity profile] emmagrant01.livejournal.com 2011-01-29 06:13 am (UTC)(link)
That wasn't the right way to say it, but it seemed like people got very political about it at times. It wasn't like that all the time, by any means (otherwise people wouldn't have hung around for long), but there was definitely a time when it seemed like there was always some kind of wank going on, and it got tiring. :-P

I only came to fandom way after Deadly Hallows and really don't know how things used to be but based on everything I've heard things seem to be nicer these days, at least socially. Of course, there are fewer of us and maybe people realise that, as there's no new canon coming, we are all the time losing folk to the new and shiny. So people will rather huddle together for comfort and shared body heat than waste energy bickering with each other :)

That said, the best thing about H/D-world is that there are FANTASTIC writers and artists here. People being nice to each other while making excellent fics and art, what's not to love?

[identity profile] emmagrant01.livejournal.com 2011-01-29 05:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I think that's likely true. The people who are still here are definitely interested in keeping the community going, and I have gotten such a strong sense of that!

People being nice to each other while making excellent fics and art

To hear it described that way after the way it was five years ago... gah, it almost brings tears to my eyes. :-P

[identity profile] starlitshore.livejournal.com 2011-01-29 10:11 am (UTC)(link)
I've been away, too, and am trying to weasel my way back in. I miss our boys! Where'd you go to find all these amazing, lovely people? I'd like to meet them!

Also no BNFery? SWEET. I am so DONE with BNFery, for serious. I've been in SPN fandom for the last five years and the ladder-climbing politics over there are just scary!

[identity profile] emmagrant01.livejournal.com 2011-01-29 05:58 pm (UTC)(link)
