A question

If you were offered a chance to be on a "reality show" on TV, would you do it?

Yes, I'm asking for a reason... :-P

ETA: Doesn't involve eating bugs as far as I know. They just knocked on my door yesterday. They're coming back today to do a screen test...

[identity profile] clara-posts.livejournal.com 2004-12-04 11:59 am (UTC)(link)
Erm... no - I wouldn't!!!!

I trust you will elaborate on the reason????

[identity profile] emmagrant01.livejournal.com 2004-12-04 12:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm really tempted. Am I crazy???

not a chance in hell, but I also have not a competetive bone in my body and can't eat most foods, so I'm thinking rats and shit would not go down well.

[identity profile] emmagrant01.livejournal.com 2004-12-04 12:06 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not like that, as far as I can tell! It's not really a competition, either. *wibbles*

Oh, man, I'm dying of curiosity.

To answer your question: Highly unlikely, unless I could be absolutely convinced that it wasn't going to be embarrassing and they weren't concealing anything. Which, given the kinds of reality shows that have been on lately, doesn't seem possible. But I suppose it would depend a lot on the situation.

[identity profile] emmagrant01.livejournal.com 2004-12-04 12:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm pretty sure it won't be embarrassing or anything, but my fear is that they always edit those shows to create characters. Do I really want to subject myself to that?

There's about a one in three chance of this happening, then another fairly slim chance of it ever getting aired, so... Not such a huge risk, maybe.

would depend entirely on which show. some i'd do in a heartbeat, others they couldn't pay me to do.

[identity profile] emmagrant01.livejournal.com 2004-12-04 12:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Right -- I would never in a million years have pursued something like this, but when it's being offered to you... *big breath*

[identity profile] jetis.livejournal.com 2004-12-04 12:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, I would. I'm not sure why--maybe I just fancy the idea of everyone in the country knowing my business. I'm such an exhibitionist.

[identity profile] emmagrant01.livejournal.com 2004-12-04 12:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I think that's part of it -- the exhibitionist in me is like, "Hey, cool!"

[personal profile] cheshyre 2004-12-04 12:24 pm (UTC)(link)
It really depends.
What's the goal of the show, and is there any way it could be twisted unfairly (what was that American Idol mockery?). What network's going to be showing it -- I think FOX has more of a reputation for nasty embarrassing gotchas than the other channels.
Read the paperwork carefully, but if you want to, best of luck!

[identity profile] emmagrant01.livejournal.com 2004-12-04 12:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Heheh. Not Fox! It's a really nice idea for a show -- at least, on the surface. There could be something sneaky going on, for all I know.

o_O Do you mind having your life exposed in front of millions on TV? If you don't, by all means go for it!

[identity profile] emmagrant01.livejournal.com 2004-12-04 12:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, that's the question, isn't it? As a closet slasher, that's exactly the part that worries me. At this point, I have no idea how much "exposure" would be involved. It could be a lot, or it could be minimal.

[identity profile] crimson-stained.livejournal.com 2004-12-04 12:49 pm (UTC)(link)
it depends on where you want to go in life. like if you are doing a show where you get a certain amount of money to become an awesome tv producer or something and that's what you want to do it's a chance for a break.

however if you want to be an actress, a reality show could put a label on you that you don't want.

if it's just for kicks then depends on what you are into. like...i wouldn't do the ones like survivor or like fear factor or something like that.

however i would do the real world. oh man. :D

[identity profile] emmagrant01.livejournal.com 2004-12-04 01:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I can't actually say much about it, but *I* wouldn't be competing with anyone in the role I'd be in. It will be filmed around me whether I choose to particpate or not, and there is a sense in which not participating could be uncomfortable. (Not that there's any pressure, of course.) And my career path is pretty firmly established, so my only concerns are whether involvement would either hurt my career or piss off my employer somehow.

So I think it fits into the "just for kicks" category! If it happens at all, at least...

[identity profile] wyomingnot.livejournal.com 2004-12-04 12:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Hell, no.

Well, unless there was a metric fuckton of money to be made.

:)

My only question would be "how much am I getting paid?" *g* But really, my life would be boring as hell to watch on TV.

Since I don't watch TV myself, I doubt I'd even notice the results. ;)

[identity profile] emmagrant01.livejournal.com 2004-12-04 01:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Gah, I wish I could say more! It would affect me whether I participate or not, since it would be filmed in my neighborhood, if it happened. I doubt I'll get paid anything. Actually, I have no idea about that!

[identity profile] lildove42.livejournal.com 2004-12-04 01:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I, for one, would jump at the opportunity to be on a reality show (assuming of course that it doesn't involve eating bugs or whatnot ie Survivor or Fear Factor). And I wouldn't do it for money or anything like that (although a cash prize would be nice) but because it's an opportunity to get out there and educate people. It is obvious from the plethora of reality shows out there that America is eating them up. And they're eating them up because of the conflict. If I could be on a show like that and be able to talk to one person about my feelings on equal rights for same-sex couples, think of all the people that would be watching that conversation. Sure, I've got some crap from my past I wouldn't want to talk about, but I'd take that chance. Go for it! Tell all the people who sit at home under their delusions of fear and protection and morality that they've been spoon-fed by Bush that they've been duped...Or at least take a chance at winning some big bucks. Plus you'll have all of us here on your flist cheering you on! And I'll even start watching reality tv if you tell me which show it is!

[identity profile] emmagrant01.livejournal.com 2004-12-04 01:08 pm (UTC)(link)
That's exactly what I was thinking, actually! The reality show is related to the concept of "suburbia", and I'm SO not a typical suburbanite. Add to that the fact that I live in Texas, and I think it would be interesting to be on display as the lone left-wing person in the neighborhood! I feel like I could be a good role model, maybe have a positive impact.

Of course, there's always the chance I would be edited to look like a pretentious asshat. :-P

[identity profile] capslocklove.livejournal.com 2004-12-04 01:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I would so do it. It's a chance of a lifetime!!

And if there's something that you can't do on the show, then you can quit or be voted off or w/e...you don't want to live your life regretting not taking up the chance...

[identity profile] emmagrant01.livejournal.com 2004-12-04 01:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that's the thing -- I won't get the chance again.

[identity profile] wordplay.livejournal.com 2004-12-04 01:08 pm (UTC)(link)
It would really, really depend. Like, a lot, and on the topic/focus of the show. BTW, a friend of mine was one of the "A Baby Story" mommies on TBS, so if her experience would be in any way helpful to you in making the decision (no idea if it would be or not) let me know and I'll hook y'all up.

[identity profile] emmagrant01.livejournal.com 2004-12-04 01:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it sounds like a good show -- I have no objections to the concept. It's a show I might even consider watching. If this ends up getting offered to us, I might take you up on that offer!

[identity profile] ms-mindfunk.livejournal.com 2004-12-04 01:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd be concerned about the exploitative nature of shows like that. Creative editing can make a hero or villian out of just about anyone. I'd have to really consider a lot of factors and weigh the benefits vs. the potential consequences.

What kind of production is it? What is the premise of the show? What kinds of shows have they put out in the past? Are they reputable, and have they treated talent well in the past? Do you get paid? What would you have to give up, or what inconvenience would you go through? What would you gain from the experience?

You're only young once, and this may be your only chance to do soemthing interesting like this. You just don't get to take chances and do adventurous things when you're older, so if it's a safe situation and you feel comfortable with the way you'll be portrayed, I'd say go for it. :)

[identity profile] emmagrant01.livejournal.com 2004-12-04 01:24 pm (UTC)(link)
The exploitative thing is what I'm concerned about, to be honest. From what I know so far, I would feel pretty comfortable doing it. There's only about a one in three chance that this will happen at this point, anyway. If it actually is a go, I think we'll probably do it. If they don't choose our neighborhood, c'est la vie.

You know, once upon a time, I would have said, heck yeah. Nowadays it seems that the whole hope of *reality* shows is to make regular folk look as idiotic and clueless and stupid as possible. No way for me now.

[identity profile] emmagrant01.livejournal.com 2004-12-04 01:56 pm (UTC)(link)
And even if this gets filmed, there's no guarantee it will ever air. We'll see what happens, I guess!

Hee, a little elaboration...

I'd do it because really, you're probably not going to have the chance to do something like this again. And maybe they will edit it to make you look dumb and/or evil, but probably the people you already know will realize you're not like that, and if random people across the country think you're insane or whatever, why would that affect your day to day life? Also, as someone else said, you could express your views on certain matters. And, d00d, you'll be on TV! Who hasn't dreamed of that?

[identity profile] lachicarubia.livejournal.com 2004-12-04 02:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I so would. I'm hoping that MTV will still be doing Real World by the time I'm 18 so that I can go and live with strangers and cause drama. It'd be fun.

I could never be on Fear Factor or anything that makes me have to eat something, because that's gross and I really couldn't do that, but other than that I think it'd be kind of fun.

[identity profile] emmagrant01.livejournal.com 2004-12-04 03:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah -- eating gross things is just not something I'm interested in! Neither is causing drama, honestly. ;-)

I wouldn't because it seems like they edit out a lot of stuff to make a perfectly normal situation blow up into an angsty mess. Besides, most reality shows end up making perfectly normal people look like blathering morons, scheming shrews, or vapid publicity whores. JMHO.

[identity profile] emmagrant01.livejournal.com 2004-12-04 04:25 pm (UTC)(link)
That pretty much sums up my hesitation!

[identity profile] jedirita.livejournal.com 2004-12-04 02:48 pm (UTC)(link)
No way in hell. Unless it was one of those PBS "14th Century Castle Life" ones. Then I would do it in a heartbeat.

[identity profile] emmagrant01.livejournal.com 2004-12-04 04:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I guess I'll have to wait and see it they decide to do the show here. MDH and I are both kinda interested, actually... :-P

[identity profile] accio-draco.livejournal.com 2004-12-04 02:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I think you should do it. Just know that if it's on Fox, they'll probably be lying about what's really going on. As per Joe Millionaire, My Big Fat Obnoxious Fiance, etc. Just don't marry anyone or eat anything gross and you should be fine.

[identity profile] emmagrant01.livejournal.com 2004-12-04 04:27 pm (UTC)(link)
*grins* I don't think anything gross will be proffered!

You must do what you feel is right - of course!

[identity profile] awaywithpixie.livejournal.com 2004-12-04 03:17 pm (UTC)(link)
If you have a single doubt, then don't do it. I would have said 'no' straight out, but I'm a sceptical Aussie who has only watched one season of Survivor and Big Brother (we only get some of the reality shows over here, but I hear some of them are right corkers!) If there is no money in it, then not interested.

But if you just want to do it for the fun, then read the contract conditions very, very, very carefully.

You must do what you feel is right - of course!
