I know, I know.
FYI, I'm on JF and GJ as emmagrant01. I have very little posted over there and have only really used those journals for commenting. Feel free to friend, if you like. :-)
It's interesting to watch all of these posts about Teh Strikethrough scroll by on my flist. I think 80% of what's on my flist is about it at this moment, and like watching CNN after a disaster, I'm finding I can't get enough. Some people seem to think everyone is overreacting, and others think this is a serious threat to fandom. I'm not sure what I think, to be honest.
However, I am pissed about PP and the other fandom-related suspensions, because AFAIK those comms and users weren't doing anything wrong. They had something listed as an interest that someone complained about, and that was it. LJ has become such a big part of the fandom infrastructure because it was a safe place for us to play, and most of us pay for the services we use. If we follow the rules, we should be able to count on the service. If we don't follow the rules there are procedures in place to deal with it, and those don't seem to have been followed in this situation. That's not right, plain and simple.
But one thing I've been heartened by ever since the FanLib thing started was the way so many fandoms seem to have come together to organize themselves and fight back. As a community, we have a lot of expertise, and it's getting put to use all over the net today. I'm proud of us. :-)
Oh, and I'm not flocking anything. As if. :-P

I don't love the fact that I feel like I'm turning into a bitter, bitter lady. I actually got snippy on someone else's journal (something that has been a big no-no for a while) because they said that everyone's reactions were childish. I got offended, and I said something. (Regretting it now. Too late, though.)
Make it stop. *whimpers at own brain*
On another note, we really need a general fandom community. I'd love to figure out exactly how many of us there are. :-D

it scares me all the jihad things^^; they chose the terminology which is even more ..how to put it.. provoking aggression.
but the witch hunt is quite disgusting, theoretically it makes anything HP related illegal, cause they kids aren't yet 18 in the book.
but everything can be seen in context, rape can be written as glorified and can be written as a study in psychology and to show how wrong it is. Context is everything. Ne..

But it is very nice to see fandoms across the board organizing around this.

I read through the letters from Abuse that are floating around, and it sounds like they consider listing a crime as an interest amounts, legally, to soliciting that crime... or something? IDK, sounds like they're just covering their asses.
It's pretty absurd imo, and I kind of wish Abuse would just come out and tell us why this sudden TOSing is happening. They aren't stupid enough to go out looking for violations, and everyone who's been suspended seems to have been told that someone reported abuse. So the question is who's reporting and why?

Oh and in an attempt to be on topic, huzzah for not locking!

I'm just biding my time and waiting for what LJs offical statement about all this is going to be.
And I'm so chuffed over fandom banding together, it's been a truly awesome thing to see. :)

To me, this isn't an issue even about fandom being threatened or targeted, it's an issue of censorship and discrimination. It's other people trying to force their moral judgements onto us while completely missing the point of expression and fiction and open dialogue. Which is not okay.

...and by 'totally clueless until today' I mean I still have no idea what's going on. I'm definitely missing, um, everything. What's this about journals being deleted and getting rid of 'suspicious' things on your interests and flocking posts?! I read this http://www.multichannel.com/blog/1300000330/post/130010013.html article, but it doesn't explain anything to me!
Explain?

okay, and this. I'm getting it now!

hear, hear!! me, neither!
i don't necessarily think anyone is over-reacting. considering the nature of fanfic in general and, specifically, some ... erm... more specific tastes, it's prudent to be cautious and when something like this happens, then that is at least a yellow flag.
however, that said, i really think the WFI wanted to go after the pedo-comms (which there were, apparently, alot of) and that HP fandom was caught in the crosshairs of an over-zealous, alarmist reach from SixApart.
i can imagine LJ is hanging low because
1) they were touted as being the sort NOT to just delete comms (esp. in light of FanLib's oft-talked about ad nauseum ToS), and yet, SixApart proved otherwise
or
2) the issue of fiction of incest not being the same as incest has been raised and they're waiting to hear back from their lawyers (they can take forever and may actually be scanning some example-comms to verify that teh fic-comms aren't soliciting the illegal activities)
or
3) they're realising how many paid memberships they could possibly lose as a result of this and wanting to figure out a way to 'make amends' without breaking their bank.
i suspect it's a little bit of all three, really.
i still have slashy goodness to post...
but i'm perfectly willing to use HPFandom or summat to host the fic and merely use LJ to direct people there. but again, i haven't invested any where NEAR the amount of time you and others have...
~shrug~
and again, i think i'm in the minority when i say that going by 'interests' was not a totally stupid idea. i mean, this ISN'T a fic archival spot. we just use it as so. it's a personal blogging network thing-a-ma-bobbi... and as such, if you see 'scat' on someone's interests, the first thing you think of isn't "oh, i bet they write Scatman Joe fanfic", you think ... on average ... this person is either a jazz aficionado, or they like to get shat on.
if it were a fic archive, then yeah, totally uncalled for. but a social blogging network jah-hoozey? not so much.
i mean, it sucks that we have to suffer a bit.

I'm not even all that involved in fandom anymore and I am hooked on watching all this like a drug. I do have to say that after getting back from my first HP con, I wanted to get back to being more involved in the fandom. Then all this comes up -- quite ironic, don't ya think? I am enjoying the camaraderie that's coming out of this big mess, though.
Though, still not so much of a fan of the haphazard way LJ has been dealing with it all, but that's been said on multiple accounts already.

I wonder what Stephen Colbert would do if he got his hands on this story? You know that one of his official "dreams" is to attend Hogwarts, and he happily allows NC-17 fanfiction on his "unofficial" website. Freedom of speech, wot?

Now I need to flit off and join the various comms that have sprung up overnight O_O

Hopefully, strikethrough will be over soon. Though, fandom won't really be the same again.
