Some of my favorites from there:

If Sanjaya wins, I'll remind myself that an untalented "idol" is better than a dumbass President.

If Sanjaya wins, I will renounce my homosexuality, vote conservative Republican, listen to Rush Limbaugh every day for the rest of my life, marry a sweet, young southern baptist girl and move to Arkansas to raise our family in a trailer park.

If Sanjaya wins, I'm gonna need what ever drugs Paula is on!

If Sanjaya wins, the Apocalypse will occur immediately after his "victory," God will appear, tell us all we've been punk'd, and all human existence will cease to be. So long long.

If Sanjaya wins, Ryan will start dating women.

If Sanjaya wins, I will send Simon a letter every day asking him when he's going to quit. Because we all know he won't.

So, what would you do? ;-)

FNL ♥!!!

That is all.

The finale is about to start! I predict Laura will easily win the role of Sandy, but I would not bet money on whether Max or Austin will win the role of Danny. And honestly, at this point, I would love it to be either of them. They're both fantastic and talented, and I will be thrilled for whoever wins and devastated for whoever doesn't.

Running commentary )

Oh, and [ profile] dorrie6 is doing the same thing, if anyone's interested in reading more running commentary. :-)

1. There's a great simulation of a ride on Disneyland's Space Mountain on YouTube here and it's AWESOME. Best viewed full-screen -- click the little box at the bottom right of the viewing screen. (Seen on Boing Boing.)

2. The finale of Grease: You're the One That I Want, which I have been following like an addict, is on tonight. They're replaying the whole season on Bravo today, and I just rewatched the couples show, and wow -- they had paired Austin & Laura and Max & Ashley (the four finalists) for that show! Crazy. I voted for Austin and Laura last week, though honestly I'd love any combination of the finalists. They're all amazingly talented. Edit: And as I'm watching all of these shows through this afternoon, I starting to like Max a little more than Austin. Heh.

3. Suzie Bright links to this video of Betty Dodson drawing a map of female genitalia, emphasizing how much of the clitoris is on the inside. Interesting!

WTF Idol?

I am finding myself disagreeing with almost everything the judges say tonight. What the hell?

I LOVED the performances by Blake, LaKisha, Gina, and (Force help me) Sanjaya, and I thought Chris R. was only so-so. :-P

ETA: Melinda made me cry. *sniffs* I LOVE HER SO MUCH.
emmagrant01: (Buffy laughing)
I know this may not make much sense to anyone outside the US, but. I'm not a football fan, so like many, I only watch the Superbowl for the commercials.

So: Superbowl commercial commentary!

• Snickers: two guys "accidentally" kiss
• Bud Light: "English class"
• Budweiser: the wannabe Dalmatian (Awww...)
• The awesome Japanese monster movie spoof for a personal navigation system (can't remember the brand name)
• Coke: The machinima commercial -- yet another example of fan practices being picked up by popular culture.
• Chevrolet: OMG the one where all the guys were stripping and washing the car with the four cringing women inside!!
• GM: the little robot trying to pick up the pieces of his shattered life to the tune of "All By Myself" totally made me cry. I can't even blame hormones.
• Coke: MDH just explained to me that the "milestones in Black history" one refers to the fact that the coaches of both teams are Black, a first in the history of the Superbowl. So, very cool.
• Sprint: Connectile dysfunction. *snerk*

Halftime: Okay, Prince? ROCKED. God, I love him. He sure looks good for a man on the verge of turning 50.

• Sheryl Crowe, have you SOLD YOUR SOUL? :-P
• Taco Bell: the lions were hilarious! "Dude, Ricardo Montalban?"
• Emerald Nuts: They always have weird-ass commercials. Is Robert Goulet that hard-up for work?
• Motorola: Waitress, referring to Charles Barkely: "Is this your dad?" LOL!
• That insurance company: K-Fed! Even though I'd seen it before, it's still funny. I bet Britney got a laugh.
• Bud Light: The hitchhiker one. "Honey, he has an axe!" "But he has Bud Light!" And then the next hitchhiker has a chainsaw, and axe man is all "He has a chainsaw!" "But he has Bud Light!" :-D
• HEB (local one, I think): Emmit Smith is superfly! That was cute.
• Budweiser: crabs worshiping the cooler of beer. The animation was good, but I think I missed something with that one...
• HP: I love OCC, so it was great to see the guys in such a cool commercial.
• eTrade: "Things you can do with one finger". Funny that they didn't mention any of the ones that popped into my mind. *coughs*
&bull: CareerBuilder: I didn't like the ads at first, but they're starting to grow on me.

Note: Most of the commercials can be seen HERE. :-D

Hee! MDH and I are watching American Idol, and we just had the following conversation:

MDH: You should write American Idol slash.
Me: Really?
MDH: Yeah, you could slash Simon and Randy.
MDH: I'm serious! I bet no one's done that.
Me: *types* *opens [ profile] idolslash* *turns the laptop screen toward him*
MDH: *stares* You're kidding!
Me: Mwahaha! We are everywhere!!

Anyone else catch this ad after tonight's repeat of Scrubs?

Announcer: "Thursdays on NBC are filled with romance. First, Jim and Pam became 'Jam' (referring to characters on The Office). Dwight and Angela became 'Dwangela'. And now, J.D. and Turk (of Scrubs) become 'Jurk'."

Followed by a scene of J.D. and Turk singing a love song to each other, with a joking but strong implication of fisting having occurred between them. The ad ends with a sweet embrace between J.D. and Turk. Apparently, this is a promo for the Scrubs musical episode coming in January.

A major network, adopting fan practices of smushing names together for pairings? Not to mention a HUGE fuckin' shout-out to the J.D./Turk slashers??? Holy crap!

So... did the practice of name smushing originate in fandom or elsewhere? Did the coining of "Brangelina" and "Bennifer" come out of fandom influences, or was it just the media being creative? Did fandom pick it up from popular culture or vice versa?

Edit: From Wikipedia: Blends and portmanteau are the closest entries I could find describing this practice.
