I'm posting this here so I will keep my word to myself. I know I will be tempted, but if I've posted it publicly, hopefully I will be able to resist because of the embarrassment factor. Right?

This year, I'm not signing up for any holiday exchange fests. For the last two years I signed up for at least three fests, and though I completed all the fics, they were all significantly late. I seem to be unable to just sign up for one fest, and also unable to start working on those fics until the deadline is looming. I've been unhappy with many of the fest fics I've written as a result. I also have not had time to enjoy the fests the last few years, because I spent half of December frantically finishing my own fics. And this year I would really rather spend my limited free time (while BG is napping) reading.

I have three long H/D fics on my hard drive in various states of completeness, and what I really need to do is get those done and posted. If I can do that before the fests start, it would be awesome.

But everyone else, go sign up! I can't wait to read the results!

Where the Naked Ladies Dance (Harry/Draco, plus others implied). This one was written for me for [livejournal.com profile] merry_smutmas, woo! It's a lovely post-Epilogue story in which both of the boys are restless and looking for something more. And interestingly enough, it takes a brothel to bring them together. This is actually one of the first H/D fics I've read this exchange season. For some reason I've been focusing on other pairings, but I think this one has gotten me in the mood to read up on my OTP again. :-D

Pickled Egg (Harry/Ron), by [livejournal.com profile] shocolate in [livejournal.com profile] bestmates_xmas. Okay, so this one has probably been recced to high heaven and already has a bazillion comments, but it deserves them all. I'm picky about my H/R fic, and this one hits my buttons beautifully. It's funny, genuine, and well-written, well worth a look even if H/R is usually not your thing. Oh, and with art by [livejournal.com profile] reallycorking -- what's not to love about that? ;-)

I had an hour to myself this afternoon, and a brief chance to read some fics over at [livejournal.com profile] merry_smutmas. Two recs:

On the Proper Appreciation and Manipulation of Pricks, by Fleur Delacour, Tri-Wizard Champion (Snape/Lupin, Snape/Lupin/Bill/[Fleur]). Holy fucking hell. Hot, with fantastic intermittent narration by a perfectly-voiced Fleur. I love fics where Bill and Fleur have a kinky open relationship, and this is a lovely addition to that particular trope. Featuring Snupin! Yum. :-D

A Return to Three (Harry/Ron/Hermione). I have a soft spot for Trio!smut, and I especially enjoy Trio!smut set during the Great Camping Trip in DH. I really loved the set-up of this one. I wish the sex scene had been a bit longer and involved more Hermione, but it wasn't a gift for me, was it? ;-)
emmagrant01: (Harry/Ginny)
I've been taking a few minutes to log in every day and check the gift comms I'm participating in, just in case a gift was posted for me. This morning I looked at my flist and saw that the very first entry was a gift for me on [livejournal.com profile] smutty_claus!

It's no secret that I ship Harry/Ginny, I think. I cheered for the pairing in canon and though I'm not exactly happy with the direction JKR took Ginny's character in canon, one of the great things about fanfic is that little things like that can be touched up. It's hard for me to find H/G fic that really hits my buttons, though. I'm not a fan of romance or schmoop; I prefer angst and longing and frantic, desperate, awkward sex. That must not be what's popular in that segment of fandom, which is fine -- but sad for me.

Oh, but some amazing anonymous author has now written me a Harry/Ginny fic that was pretty much exactly what I wanted! Seriously, this may be one of the best H/G fics I've ever read. It had me smiling and crying and in awe at the sheer craft with which it was put together. It's angsty and beautiful, yet gloriously hopeful and somehow incredibly romantic -- and still not fluffy! And with exactly the sort of sex scene I like! The way the POV shifts works better than I think I would have guessed if someone had described it to me, so I'll let you see that for yourself. The language is just... gah. Perfect. I can't wait to find out who wrote it! (Though I have a feeling it's someone I already know.)

Please go read it and shower the author with comments! That Which is Wholly Unsayable.

Today is [livejournal.com profile] geoviki's birthday, and I hope she has a great one! I was honored to meet Viki at The Witching Hour years ago, and it was so great to get a chance to sit across from her and talk. There's nothing quite like meeting a favorite author in person, you know? It's like, wow, all of those fics I loved came from the brain of this actual person sitting in front of me! She's funny and smart, and an all-around lovely person -- one we're incredibly lucky to have in fandom. Happy Birthday, darling!

On a completely unrelated note, I've really been enjoying reading holiday exchange fics. I've carved out time for it this year, and though I have no hope of reading everything, I tend to look for intriguing pairings and summaries and just click and see how it goes. I used to pick fics to read by comment counts, but I don't any more. They can be pretty misleading, honestly. There are some real gems this year with comment counts only in the teens, and after reading them I wonder why there are so few comments. In many cases, I think it's the pairing that might be turning people off. People have their faves, and there's nothing wrong with that. I've always found holiday exchanges to be a great opportunity to read outside of your comfort zone, though.

Another thing I love about fic exchanges is the spirit in which (most) people participate in them. Most of these fics were written by people who worked really hard to create a fic tailored to their recipient's request -- not an easy thing to do for someone you don't know well, or when the request is off the beaten path of what you usually write. But the whole point of exchanges is to create GIFTS for others, and I love that aspect of it. I'm sure some people approach writing for exchanges in a very selfish way, thinking it's going to be their "big break" and being disappointed when their fic doesn't get the attention they think it deserves, but whatever. Bah, humbug on them. ;-)

So part of the fun of reading these fics is to read the comment left by the recipient, to see how they reacted. Very often their reaction helps me appreciate aspects of the fic that may not have worked so perfectly for me, and I appreciate getting that perspective. After all, it doesn't matter what *I* think of the gift. That fic wasn't written to please me, or you, or anyone else but the recipient. And there's something really cool about seeing that unfold. :-)

A couple more:

Between Friends (Harry/Ron/Seamus). Mmmm, threesome. I don't read a lot of Harry/Ron, but when I do I especially enjoy fics where both boys sort of stumble into an attraction for each other by accident and act on it spontaneously, without really thinking through the consequences. In this case, Seamus is the vehicle for making that happen, and the result is a lot of fun.

This Too Shall Pass (Harry/Ginny, set right after DH). I've avoided reading a lot of post-DH H/G hurt/comfort fic, mostly because I'm not really into schmoop and most fics I've seen along those lines are incredibly schmoopy. But this one deals with the characters' emotions very realistically. On top of that, the sex is awkward and fumbling, something I always like.

Better Left Unsaid (Harry/Luna). I should rec this one with a caveat: there were a couple of things in it that are back button triggers for me, and I found myself closing the window two separate times and going "Meh". But I found I was curious about how it turned it, so I went back to it twice -- and in the end, I liked it. (I don't mean that to be a criticism; it's more that I'm a really picky reader.) Luna is very much herself here, as are Ron and Hermione (they are canonically annoying and meddlesome in a way that really works for me), and Harry's repeated humiliation over his "predicament" is a genuine source of humor, even if it never quite gets resolved (or does it? That may just be a matter of opinion). The fic ends a bit abruptly for my taste, but overall I enjoyed the story.

I'm really reading outside of my normal pattern here, aren't I? Ah, but that's what holiday exchanges are all about, IMO.

You Didn't Think They Just Sold It To Him, Did You? (Fred/George/Draco, set during HBP). This one is KINKY. I almost never read this sort of fic, as S&M is not really my thing, but the premise here intrigued me -- that Fred and George made Draco pay a little extra to get that Peruvian Instant Darkness Powder. Even if you aren't into the kink, read the set-up, because it's really well done. I was surprised how hot I found it, in the end... ;-)
emmagrant01: (Default)
God, this is so much fun!

What Has Been Lost (Sirius/Ron, Sirius/Regulus). I love me a fucked-up Sirius, and this one is just glorious. Even better, it's written from Sirius's POV so that the degree to which he is fucked up (and why) are revealed to you slowly. Yum!

Coming Clean (Teddy/James). I haven't read a lot of next gen fic, mostly because it seemed pretty much like original fic to me (and I have to be in the right mood), but I really enjoyed this one. The combination of elicit-hiding-from-the-parents sex and the very real chance of getting caught along with OMG first-time rimming just seriously did me in.

Men in Robes (Draco/Charlie). This fic is hilarious, fun, sharp, fast-paced, and well-written. It's a fantastic send-up of Men in Black, only with wizards and slash! I mean, what more could you want? :-D
emmagrant01: (Default)
I seriously can't remember the last time I sat down at my computer with the intention of just reading fic. I haven't had that much free time in months, heh. So though I should be grading, I gave myself a little break this morning and decided to get started reading some exchange fics. I started with December 1, but then ended up shifting forward when it became obvious that the comments dropped off pretty sharply after a week. Here's what I've especially enjoyed so far:

How Ron Weasley Learned to Tolerate Kimchi and Draco Malfoy. (Ron/Draco, set in Korea post-war) This is a pairing I usually don't read much of, but the premise sounded intriguing, and I'm really glad I read it. The writing and characterization are fantastic, and this author does a great job with the slow reveal. I enjoy fics that put the canon characters in foreign settings, and this one really captured the feeling of being a tourist in an Asian country, IMO. Oh, and hot. ;-)

Edit: The recipient, [livejournal.com profile] glockgal, created a gorgeous piece of art to go with this fic. (Totally worksafe.)

Suppliance of a Minute. (Dumbledore/Grindelwald, set long, long ago) I have been wanting to read more of this pairing, and I'll admit that the warnings gave me a moment of hesitation, but I was sucked in by the language of the fic. It's written in a 19th century style, and it really works. Gellert is so brazen and Albus so uncertain, and I even found the non-con hot! Yum.

Veritas (Sirius/James/Lily) I love threesomes! This one struck me as being very real for a first time, with Lily being curious but nervous, Sirius being all bravado (but really more of a voyeur than anything else), and James being completely confident in his relationship with Lily and in his friendship with Sirius. A lovely, sexy read.
emmagrant01: (Draco - in ur fic)
I'm horribly behind in reading [livejournal.com profile] hd_holidays fics, but here are three I have read and enjoyed:

Counting the Stars.
This one was written in second person voice, which is something I usually avoid, but it really works here. It's short, terse without being pretentiously so, and ambiguously dark. Yum!

The World of the Living.
Present tense must be the new black. ;-) This was a great fic, and was especially interesting because it was told from Luna's perspective. The story unfolded slowly and very realistically, and started with a premise that is both believable from canon and very original. It was just a joy to read, pure and simple.

Room with a View. This one was written for me, and I loved it! It's written from the perspective of a portrait hanging in Grimmauld Place, and it tells the story of the search for Slytherin's locket. It's such a unique approach, and it's really a fantastic read.

Those of you who've read more of these fics than I have, which would you recommend? Rec me more [livejournal.com profile] hd_holidays fics please!
emmagrant01: (Harry/Draco in bed)
[livejournal.com profile] hd_holidays will be coming to a close in the next week (I think), and in my efforts to catch up on reading fics from other exchanges, I've been neglecting that one.

So rec me stuff, please? Which fics in that fest have you read and loved (so far)?

Edit: Lots of recs in comments, plus:
[livejournal.com profile] shaggirl's recs here.
[livejournal.com profile] sulky_rhino's recs here.

And wow, the [livejournal.com profile] smutty_claus reveal post is now up! Thank you to [livejournal.com profile] ladytory for my awesome Neville/Susan gift fic!

I wrote this one, and I should say that I was stunned by the feedback I got on this fic. It was seriously some of the most thoughtful feedback I've ever gotten on a fic of this length. I guess I should write het more often! ;-) I really need a H/G icon of some sort too.

The reveal is coming soon, but I thought I'd slip these recs in under the wire. Mostly H/D, and I haven't had a chance to read nearly as many fics as I'd like.

Smutmas recs, with some author guesses )
emmagrant01: (Yule Ball)
The number of holiday exchange fics that have been posted in the last month is truly staggering. Shit, the number of H/D fics alone is staggering. And how many of them have I read? Very few. I just haven't had time. Much of that was my own fault -- I ended up doing a heck of a lot of writing this month (I think every exchange fic I wrote was turned in late). And I haven't been able to get away from my relatives for any stretch of time to do anything more than that. *sigh*

My goal was to follow [livejournal.com profile] merry_smutmas, [livejournal.com profile] hd_holidays, [livejournal.com profile] harry_holidays, [livejournal.com profile] smutty_claus, and [livejournal.com profile] snupin_santa. I am going to do my best to go through and read before the reveals, but I fear it may be impossible. I'll do my best!

Oh, and on a completely different topic: I do understand why some people might not put an email address on their UI page, but when they restrict comments to friends-only on top of that, it basically means that it's completely impossible for people they haven't friended to contact them. And why doesn't that LJusername@livejournal.com email address work anymore? I give up. :-P
