amnesia fic ps by flightofthemotion

Title: The Hollow Now
Chapter 3/?

Author: Emma Grant
Pairings: John/Sherlock, John/Mary
Rating: Explicit
Summary: Almost two years after the events of HLV, John has an accident and loses all memory of the last four years of his life: meeting Mary, Sherlock returning, and everything since.
Length: 3200 words this chapter; 8650 total so far
Warnings: none
Tags: amnesia, probably inaccurate science and medicine, baby Watson, infidelity, romance

Notes:

  1. Written for Benedictcumberbatchruinedme, who bid on a fic from me for the Sherlock Committee Fic Auction for DashCon 2014. This story is based on her prompt.

  2. Please be warned that this story takes a fairly sympathetic view of the character of Mary Morstan. If that doesn't work for you, I'd prefer you just not read rather than leave negative comments. Thanks in advance for your understanding.

  3. This story plays fast and loose with the science regarding memory loss resulting from traumatic brain injury (TBI). No offense is intended. If I get something wrong and you can't overlook it for the sake of the plot, I'd prefer you email me privately to let me know (emmagrant01 at gmail).

  4. I will be doing a lot of traveling for the next couple of months and may not be able to post chapters weekly (as I usually do). I will post as frequently as I can, and I thank you in advance for your patience!

  5. I asked for a manip to go with this fic and three different people created one! The image above was created by flightofthemotion.

  6. Huge thanks to drinkingcocoa for her thoughtful advice and commentary on earlier drafts of this chapter!

Sometimes when fandom drama gets me down, I go looking for people arguing just as voraciously about an issue I don't care about. And then I observe that it's kind of the same argument, but with different nouns inserted.

It turns out that this is a really good way to regain my perspective.

[livejournal.com profile] kerryblaze suggested a while back that those of us who've moved away from the HP fandom in recent years spend a weekend sometime diving back in and posting HP-related content on LJ just like we used to. She wants to make it happen sometime this fall, and she's looking for people who might want to help here.

I really want this to happen!
emmagrant01: (horcrux)

  1. People who read an article I raved about and then pull a single line out of context in order to go on a rant about how _____-ist/stupid/wrong the writer is, and make a comment on my post to that effect.

  2. People who assume that my life choices are somehow a commentary on their life choices, and then treat me accordingly.

  3. People who assume that anyone who did not make the same life choices as they did are idiotic sheep who just haven't thought hard enough about their lives before having/not having kids, pursuing an education/career, getting into a relationship, putting food in their mouths, etc.

  4. People who are quick to point out someone who is different and mock them for it, no matter how "different" they themselves are.

  5. People who tell me that I am wrong about my motivation for being in fandom, reading/writing/enjoying slash, enjoying geeky things, having the sexuality I do, etc.

  6. People who don't think of the people they're being cruel to on the internet as people, but as faceless avatars with no feelings.

Disclaimer: I have probably done all of these things at some point in my life, so I understand that it's an easy trap to fall into, especially on the internet. And I'm sure that I will continue to add to the list as I get older, and include things I do right now. :-P

DashCon

So. Wow.

Surely by now you've heard about the surreal meltdown of the Tumblr con called DashCon in Chicago over the weekend. So I was there, along with many friends, and it was quite an experience.

I was invited to be a special guest over a year ago, and I was really flattered. TBH I might not have attended the con otherwise, because I generally enjoy smaller single-fandom cons more than big, multi-fandom things -- as this one was being marketed to be. I should note at this point that I was never offered any kind of comps. Apparently other special guests were flown out and had their rooms paid for and everything, but I was not offered any of that. I paid my own way -- which is totally fine, I should say. A couple of months ago more friends from [livejournal.com profile] threepatch decided to go, and we asked DashCon if TPP could be listed on the special guest page like the Baker Street Babes (and I) were. We were declined, something we were later grateful for.

This is gonna get long, so I'll cut. )

NOTE: I will probably continue editing and adding stuff to this post as I think about more.

If you're not already eating PB2, seriously -- give it a try. If you love peanut butter, it's an amazing low-calorie substitute! (Available at Target, many US grocery stores, and also on Amazon.)

Today I was craving peanut butter cookies, so I decided to search for some PB2 recipes. And there are a TON, wow. There is a lot you can do with this stuff. (I usually just make enough to eat a big spoonful, heh.) Here are the cookies I ended up making. The recipe is adapted slightly from here.

Wow, I didn't realize just how much I've missed this place! Coming back here and cruising through my flist and seeing people make posts about so many different things -- all of it reminds me of a time when fandom didn't feel so huge and impersonal and full of drama. On LJ, I didn't feel like I had to censor and edit every comment. If I needed to vent about something, I could do it in a locked post and get it off my chest and move on. I've gotten so used to biting my tongue for fear of getting hate from some part of fandom I will inevitably piss off, and I don't think I'd realized just how much that had sucked the fun out of my fandom experience.

It's been nice to come here and see posts on my flist and people having discussions and actually being able to disagree with each other without in ending in massive wank. Lord knows LJ isn't low-wank by any stretch, but I feel like it's manageable here, if that makes sense.

Thanks for everyone who gave me encouragement on my last post about needing to find motivation to write. I really appreciate it!
emmagrant01: (woman)
Every time I go anywhere near Tumblr these days, I start to hear about wank, so I back off again. It's summer and I have a kid on my hands full time at the moment, so it's easy to just keep busy doing other things. And between [livejournal.com profile] threepatch and [livejournal.com profile] tumblr_refuge, I feel like I'm staying reasonably active in the fandom (and having fun while doing it).

But I have a Sherlock fic I really, really need to finish, and I have to figure out how to find the motivation to do it. It's set after HLV, so there is all of that to deal with, and wow. That's just hard right now. I'm not sure what I believe about Mary's backstory and where John's and Sherlock's heads are after that episode. (Not that I think everyone else is sure either, but man, that makes it complicated to work out the plot.)  And when I start to think about the unpleasant comments I am bound to get on it (because no matter what you write, you're going to upset someone who doesn't know how to use the back button these days), it makes me want to forget the whole thing and go do something else.

But I can't, because it's being written for someone who paid a large amount of money for a fic from me in a fandom fundraiser, and this is the fic she wanted. And it's been a year and I really do need to get it done. I actually like the prompt a lot and think that if I can just get myself back to work on it, it will probably turn out to be something I will enjoy writing.  [livejournal.com profile] drinkingcocoa has seen a few chapters and has assured me that it's worth writing, and that it will turn out well.

BG will be in a day camp next week from 9-5 every day, and so I will have time to sit down and write. I just need the motivation to actually do it. Got any you can spare? :-P

[livejournal.com profile] pennswoods is collecting your thoughts over here!

emmagrant01: (woman)

So far, I'm really loving this technique. I've recently started knitting socks using Magic Loop, and I've always wanted to try two at once. I'm really enamored with the idea of getting them both done at the same time!  If these work out well, I've got some gorgeous yarn that [livejournal.com profile] helens78 gave me, and I'm going to knit a more complicated pair with that.

emmagrant01: (Default)

Americans Will Tolerate a Variety of In-Laws. One Exception: Atheists.

Other good news is that opposition to interracial marriage, at least overt opposition, is also fairly low, with only 11 percent of Americans balking at the idea of a new family member of a different race. (How likely you are to bothered by racial mixing rose with levels of conservatism, with only one percent of strong liberals opposing interracial marriage and 23 percent of strong conservatives doing so.) And Americans are even more welcoming to foreigners, with only 7 percent of respondents opposing marriage to someone born and raised outside of the U.S.

There's one group, however, that continues to cause fear and loathing across the land: atheists.

I don't even know what to say about this.

No: actually, I do. I'm pretty sure that several members of my mon's family would completely disown me if they knew I was an atheist. Which is why I just shrug off questions of religion whenever I'm with them.

But still, wow.

emmagrant01: (woman)

One of the bedtime things I do with BG is that once the lights are out, we get under the covers and I tell a story. He picks the theme or topic and often the main character, and I tell a story based on that. It's kind of like writing original fic on the spot, given a prompt. Sometimes the stories are mediocre (I can't figure out how to wrap up the plot and just give it a crappy ending), but sometimes they're rally good. The good ones we end up telling over and over and embellishing, improving, and so on.

So it has occurred to me on many occasions that those are the stories I should consider actually writing and trying to get published. I have no idea about children's lit, but it's always there in the back of my mind.

Anyway, BG really liked last night's story about a little squirrel named Sammy who started sneezing and couldn't stop. He loved it so much that he just presented me with fan art for it:

My kid's art: let me show you it. )

I love it! Getting fan art for something I've written is so amazing always, but this was extra special. :-)

I'm taking a bit of a Tumblr hiatus for my own personal sanity, so I'm going to try to hang out here more often.

Where does the Sherlock fandom mostly hang out on LJ these days? Any communities I should know about?  I'm totally out of the loop here. TIA!

EDIT:  Okay, so [livejournal.com profile] tumblr_refuge now exists! Membership is moderated for now, but I'll approve everyone, obviously. Come join!

Twist

Title: Twist
Author: Emma Grant
Fandom/Pairing: BBC Sherlock, John/Sherlock, offscreen John/Mary, offscreen Sherlock/Janine

Summary: A what-if remix of one scene from His Last Vow:
Instead of ignoring John's jealousy over Janine after she leaves 221B, Sherlock decides to say something.
Length: 5000 words
Warnings: none
Contains: infidelity, angst, possibility of a happy ending for this episode
Notes: This is a one-shot that I wanted to get out of my head before moving on to a bigger project. Some dialogue is adapted directly from the episode; I used [livejournal.com profile] arianedevere's transcript of HLV for reference.
